"We are a group of five rural counties that are connected by common borders and the Musselshell River drainage with a common purpose of working together to meet the challenge of grown and development to protect and conserve the custom and culture and the wise use of land and resources while recognizing private property rights."

Central Montana RC&D helping six counties in Musselshell Valley
develop natural resources plan 

The Central Montana RC&D Council is a grassroots organization devoted to improving and maintaining the quality of life in the region. One of the components of its mission is to assist with area resource planning. In light of that, the Central Montana RC&D Board of Directors has committed funding towards the development of such a plan. The final plan will include counties in the Musselshell Valley including Petroleum, Garfield, Musselshell, Golden Valley, Wheatland and Meagher.

There are a number of policies and plans that have some component relating to natural resources; for example, area plans, growth policies, county weed plans, watershed plans and fuel mitigation plans. The reasoning for creating a regional natural resource plan is to help counties in the Musselshell Valley document their stance on natural resource issues.

There is an increasing movement to dictate policies to small units of local government. These small local governments know that they need to have policies and plans in place to strengthen their position, and a regional approach gives them more strength and credibility and allows them to participate in the larger scope, State and Federal planning process.

The intent is to establish a more consistent and defensible position with regards to State and Federal decision making processes, according to the county commissioners leading this effort.

The group is gathering existing documents related to natural resource planning. This process will also involve public meetings as we move forward.
